Congratulations to Multi-Rose Jerseys Inc., Rock Rapids, for receiving the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award. The award is given by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to honor producers for caring for their livestock in an ethical manner and using farming practices that protect the environment. The herd is owned by the Metzger family, who was recognized at a ceremony in June in Rock Rapids.

Brian Waddingham, executive director of The Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers, Evan, Marvin, Brett, Drew and Dana Metzger and Mike Naig, Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture.

Several Iowa Jersey breeders have been recognized for their contributions to the dairy industry in recent months.

G. Joe Lyon of Toledo was honored by Midwest Dairy at their annual meeting in Minneapolis, MN, in March for his 45 years of service to dairy promotion. Lyon operates Lyon Jerseys with his family.

John and Joan Maxwell of Donahue received an Agriculture Leader Award from Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey for their service to agriculture in the education and promotion division (agritourism).

The Maxwells own and operate Cinnamon Ridge Dairy with his daughters, Amy and Kara, and brother, Edwin.

Production Laurels

Three Iowa Jersey herds rank nationally among their peers for production averages from 2015.

The herd owned by John and Edwin Maxwell, Donahue, ranks 2nd for milk, 4th for fat and 3rd for protein (herds with 150-299 cows) with a lactation average of 22,764M, 1,071F and 823P on 225 cows. Summit Farms Inc., Lester, ranks 7th for milk and 9th for fat in the same category with an average of 21,364M, 1,023F and 777P on 210 cows.

The Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation, Calmar, ranks sixth for milk, third for fat and fifth for protein (herds with 40-79 cows) with an average of 22,434M, 1,154F and 855P on 48 cows.
